From Nairobi
to ILR in 3 years
— without a sponsor.
The UK Global Talent visa is open to Kenyan nationals on the same terms as every other nationality: self-petition, no employer sponsor, and Indefinite Leave to Remain after 3 years on Exceptional Talent or 5 years on Exceptional Promise. There is no per-country quota and no country-specific evidence bar. Engineers, founders, researchers and creatives are assessed by an endorsing body against the same criteria. This page covers the mechanics for Kenyan applicants applying from Kenya or already overseas.

What changes on the UK side.
No sponsor, no Certificate of Sponsorship.
The Skilled Worker route needs a UK employer with a current sponsor licence, an eligible role and a salary above the threshold, and ties you to that employer. Global Talent removes that dependency: endorsement is awarded to you personally, and you can work for any UK employer, several employers, or yourself.
Apply from Kenya — endorsement is assessed remotely.
Stage 1 endorsement is filed online; you do not need to be in the UK first. Stage 2 is the visa application on gov.uk, which includes biometrics at a visa application centre. Check gov.uk for the current centre locations and the document list that applies to you.
Same four endorsing-body criteria as everyone else.
Digital technology is endorsed by Tech Nation; natural sciences by the Royal Society; humanities and social sciences by the British Academy; engineering by the Royal Academy of Engineering; arts and culture by Arts Council England. Evidence is judged on substance, not country of origin.
Family travels with you on day one.
A spouse or partner is added as a dependant and receives unrestricted UK work permission immediately, including self-employment. Children under 18 are included. Dependants follow a 5-year settlement track regardless of the principal's tier.
Check the document list for your situation.
Stage 2 documents are passport plus endorsement, per gov.uk. Some applicants also need a tuberculosis test depending on where they have lived. Check the gov.uk list of countries requiring a TB test before you book anything; gov.uk is authoritative.

Why the route is the same for Kenyan applicants as for anyone else
The UK does not allocate Global Talent endorsements by country of birth or residence. There is no per-country cap, no priority date and no visa bulletin. A Kenyan senior engineer, researcher or founder is assessed against the same evidence threshold as any other applicant.
Compared with alternatives: Skilled Worker requires a sponsor, a Certificate of Sponsorship and a 5-year employer tie. Innovator Founder requires endorsement of a specific business plan. Global Talent endorses the person, and leaves you free to change employers or work for yourself.
Choosing the endorsing body
Digital technology profiles go to Tech Nation (Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise, depending on seniority and external recognition). Researchers go to the Royal Society, British Academy or Royal Academy of Engineering depending on discipline. Arts and culture applicants go to Arts Council England.

Paying UK fees
All UK fees are paid in GBP through the gov.uk online portal. Plan for the full amount up front, including the Immigration Health Surcharge for every dependant: children pay the adult rate. Tell your bank before a large foreign-currency payment so it is not flagged.

What you'll actually pay.
Practical tips from real applications.
Use referees with international standing — at least two letters from outside your current employer.
Cite hard evidence — publications, named users, revenue, open-source stats.
Check the gov.uk document list and TB-test country list for your own circumstances.
Track UK absences — ILR allows at most 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12 months.
Don't rely only on your direct manager.
Don't recap your CV in the personal statement; the panel reads your CV separately.
Don't assume a requirement from a forum post — gov.uk wins on conflict.
Don't plan frequent multi-week trips abroad after the move without checking the ILR rule.

Common questions.
Can Kenyan citizens apply for the UK Global Talent visa?+
Yes. Global Talent is open to nationals of any country that need a UK visa. There is no per-country quota; Kenyan applicants are assessed on the same endorsement criteria as everyone else.
Do I need a UK employer or university connection?+
No. Global Talent is self-petition — no sponsor and no prior UK affiliation is required.
How long until I can settle in the UK?+
ILR after 3 years on Exceptional Talent (and academic endorsements) or 5 years on Exceptional Promise. Dependants follow a 5-year settlement track.
What does the application cost?+
Endorsement is £561 (Stage 1) and the visa is £205 per applicant (Stage 2), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year per adult, paid up front. A single applicant on the 3-year track pays £561 + £205 + £3,105 IHS = £3,871. Fees are paid in GBP; check gov.uk for current amounts.
How long does it take?+
Tech Nation endorsement is typically 5-8 weeks (3-week fast-track for +£500). Royal Society / British Academy peer-review fast-track is 2 weeks. The Stage 2 visa decision is about 3 weeks standard. Times vary; gov.uk and the endorsing bodies are authoritative.
Can my spouse work in the UK on my dependant visa?+
Yes — unrestricted. Global Talent dependants get full work permission from day one, including self-employment.
Do I need a tuberculosis test?+
It depends on where you have lived, not on citizenship. Check the gov.uk list of countries requiring a TB test and the Global Talent document list before you book; gov.uk is authoritative.
Will a Kenyan degree or Kenyan work history count?+
Yes. The endorsing bodies assess the evidence on its substance, not the country it was produced in. Pair local achievements with externally verifiable evidence such as publications, talks, open-source work or independent referees.
